Fireflies, Mother Nature's own fairy lights, are out in force right now, and Maharashtra is one of the greatest places to watch them.
The Maharashtra Fireflies Festival has just started and will run till the end of the month in various locations across the state (June).
For the month-long festival, camps are being held in Rajmachi Village, Siddhagad Wadi, Prabalmachi Village, Bhandardara, Ghatghar, Kothaligad, Kondane Caves, and Purushwadi. Those interested in trekking, hiking, camping, and night firefly walks can purchase the 1D/1N programme.
Festivals to keep an eye on include: Purushwadi Firefly Festival - Purushwadi Village Treks and Trails (till June 26)
Treks and Trails near Lonavala: Rajmachi Fireflies Trek & Camp (till June 25).
When it comes to seeing fireflies, it's preferable to get away from the city's light pollution. There will be plenty of peace and quiet, as well as the fewest light and sound disruptions in the neighbourhood. Sounds like the start of a fantastic short break from the city.
For these bioluminescent insects, the Western Ghats region provides an ideal home. Fireflies are, in fact, beetles. The smooth and rhythmic flashing of these fireflies is actually the bugs talking with one other in order to attract and respond to the opposing sex.
Just before the monsoon, millions of these beetles emerge, and they live for about two months to mate and produce eggs.
Keep in mind that the population of fireflies is declining due to habitat destruction. They simply cease to exist once their environment is paved or altered by human intervention. Because fireflies are not migratory, be careful not to disturb their habitat when visiting these locations to see them in action.
