Gangtok was founded in 1894 as a small hamlet and became the capital of the newly formed Sikkim in 1975. In 1947, after India gained independence from British rule, Sikkim became an Indian protectorate. In 1975, Sikkim was merged into India as a full-fledged state. Gangtok was declared the capital of the new state.
