About Procida

Naples is the capital of the province of Naples and the third most populous municipality in Italy after Rome and Milan. It is located in the Campania region on the Gulf of Naples. The metropolitan area of Naples is the second most populous in Italy after Milan and the most populous in Southern Italy, with a population of around 4.5 million. The city was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC. It became a Roman colony in the 2nd century BC, and was given the name of Neapolis. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD destroyed the city and buried it under tons of ash. The city was rebuilt and rose to become one of the most important centres of art and culture in the Roman world. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Naples was conquered by the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines, the Lombards, and the Normans. In the 11th century, it became a principality, and in the 12th century, it was united with the Kingdom of Sicily to form the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Naples was the most important city in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. In 1860, Naples became part of the Kingdom of Italy. During World War II, it was occupied by the Germans and the Allies. As a result of the war, Naples suffered extensive damage and loss of life. It became a UNESO World Heritage Site in 1995. Today, Naples is a major tourist destination and an important industrial centre. It is also a major transportation hub, with a large port, an international airport, and a network of motorways and railways.
