About Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary

The Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Western Ghats mountain range of Karnataka state, southern India. It is a Protected Area (PA) under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 505 km2 and is home to a variety of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, elephants, gaur, sambar, chital, barking deer, sloth bear, and Malabar giant squirrel.

The Brahmagiri hills are a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. The hills are noted for their rich biodiversity, with more than 1,500 plant species, including nearly 100 species of medicinal plants. The sanctuary is also home to more than 250 bird species, including the endangered great Indian hornbill and Malabar pied hornbill.

The Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1973 to protect the area's rich biodiversity. The sanctuary is open to the public from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. There is an entry fee of Rs. 25 per person. The sanctuary can be reached from the town of Madikeri, which is about 55 km away. Madikeri is well connected by road to the cities of Bangalore and Mysore.
