The museum was founded in 1977 by Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located in the Hari Niwas Palace, which was also built by Singh. The museum contains a collection of paintings, sculptures, and other artifacts from the Dogra people. It also contains a collection of traditional costumes and textiles.
