According to legend, Jwala Devi was once married to a king who went to war and was killed. His widow, Jwala Devi, was so overcome with grief that she threw herself into a burning pyre. Her body was consumed by the flames, but her soul remained. Her husband's spirit appeared to her and said, "I will always be with you." Jwala Devi's soul was then said to have merged with the flames, and she became the goddess of fire.
