History Of Mandleshwar

Mandleshwar is an ancient town and a Nagar Palika Parishad in Khargone district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of Mandleshwar tehsil. Mandleshwar is said to be founded by the Lord Shiva himself and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. Mandleshwar has a long and rich history. The town was a part of the Mauryan Empire during the reign of Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. It passed on to the Gupta Empire in the 4th century AD and then to the Vakataka Dynasty in the 5th century. The town was largely destroyed by the Muslim invader, Qutb-ud-din Aibak in the early 13th century. The town was rebuilt by the Maratha general, Ranoji Shinde in the late 18th century. The town was captured by the British in 1818 during the Third Anglo-Maratha War. The town was transferred to the Central Provinces and Berar in 1861. It was merged with Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
