The first museum in the Vatican was the Picture Gallery, which was founded by Pope Julius II in the early 16th century. In the 17th century, the Museum of Sacred Art was added to the Vatican Museums. The Borgia Apartment was opened in 1978. The Vatican Museums are now among the world's most visited tourist attractions, with over 5 million visitors a year.
