The lake is about 8 km (5.0 mi) long and is about 2 km (1.2 mi) wide. It is located about 240 km (150 mi) from the district headquarters of Kaza.
Chandratal is a sacred lake for the Hindus and is believed to be the spot where the Chandra (Moon) god was born. It is also believed that the Hindu god Shiva bathed in the lake. The lake is mentioned in the Hindu epic poem, the Mahabharata.
 
The Chandratal Lake trek is a popular trek in the Spiti Valley. The trek starts from the village of Batal, which is located about 24 km (15 mi) from the town of Kaza. The trek passes through the villages of Chandratal, Kunzum La, and Losar. The trek is about 48 km (30 mi) long and takes about two days to complete.
