The City of Valletta “The City Built by Gentlemen for Gentlemen”, was officially recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980. The city is named for Jean Parisot de la Valette, who succeeded in defending the island from an Ottoman invasion in 1565. This magnificent city is nothing short of an open-air museum. Valletta known as Il-Belt, contains buildings from the 16th century onwards, built during the rule of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, also known as Knights Hospitaller. Walking into this beautiful city surrounded by bastions, and ravelins we see the Grandeous Triton Fountain which leads to the City Gates and New Parliament building, a Masterpiece of the renowned Architect Renzo Piano, we’ll walk past St. James Cavalier, originally a grain storage space which now has been turned into an Arts and Creativity Centre. Castille Square and the imposing Auberge the Castille now Office of the Prime Minister, continuing to the Upper Barracca Gardens for a breathtaking panorama of the Grand Harbour. We will walk past the Auberge D’Italie now known as MUZA (Museum of Fine Arts) through Merchants Street onto the Jewel at the centre of the city the St. John’s Co-Cathedral and Museum, housing the painting ‘The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist’ by Caravaggio, considered one of Caravaggio’s masterpieces and the only painting signed by the painter. We will leave this beautiful city and we’ll make our way to the Ta’ Qali Crafts Village. located nearby was once a British WWII outpost, but has been converted to a village for local handicrafts. This is the perfect place to pick up treasures that will remind you of your Malta visit. Lastly, we will visit Mdina, sitting majestically on top of the Hill, with amazing views of the Maltese island. Malta’s Old Capital, remained the centre of the Maltese nobility and religious authorities well after it lost its status as Malta’s capital city in the 1540’s. Today Mdina is better known as the Silent City because of its literally quiet and narrow streets that give off a quaint yet very homey atmosphere. In Mdina, you will have some time to enjoy lunch before the walking tour and time to relax and enjoy the area afterwards. 17:00 Ending at the Hotel. Free time at the hotel and overnight.
