About Kinnaur The Kinnaur district is located in the northeast of Himachal Pradesh state in India. It is bounded by the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China to the east, the Sutlej River to the south and the Spiti River to the north. The district has an area of 4,462 square kilometers. The district headquarters is at Reckong Peo. The Kinnaur district is a high altitude district with a number of peaks over 6,000 meters. The district has a population of 54,869 (2001 census) and a population density of 12 people per square kilometer. There are two towns in the district, Reckong Peo and Kalpa. The majority of the population is Hindu. There are also a number of Buddhists and Muslims. The Kinnaur district is a popular tourist destination. The district has a number of scenic valleys, such as the Sangla Valley and the Spiti Valley. The district is also home to the Kinnaur Kailash, a sacred mountain peak.
