About Jallianwala Bagh
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, took place on 13 April 1919 when a British Indian Army soldier, General Reginald Dyer, ordered his troops to fire on an unarmed gathering of men, women and children in the Jallianwala Bagh Garden in the city of Amritsar, Punjab. The civilians had assembled to participate in a peaceful protest against the arrest and deportation of two leaders of the Indian independence movement, Dr. Satya Pal and Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew. Dyer's troops fired over 1,650 rounds of ammunition into the crowd, resulting in the deaths of 379 people and wounding 1,137 others. The British government condemned the massacre and ordered a judicial inquiry, which produced a report that was critical of Dyer but did not find him guilty of any wrongdoing.
