The ruins of Hattusha are located in the Boğazkale district of Çorum Province in Turkey. The site is located on a hill overlooking the Kızılırmak River. The first settlement on the site was a Hittite fortress built by Hattusili I around 1800 BC. The city grew and became the capital of the Hittite Empire. The city was destroyed by the Assyrians in the late 12th century BC. The ruins of Hattusha were first discovered by archaeologists in 1875. The site was excavated by the German Archaeological Institute from 1906 to 1911. The Hattusha ruins are open to the public. There is an admission fee. There is a museum on the site which exhibits artifacts from the city. The best way to get to Hattusha from Ankara is to take a bus to Çorum and then take a taxi to the ruins.
