Legend has it that a wealthy merchant named Eachanari went on a pilgrimage to Benares and on his return, he stopped at a place near Coimbatore to rest. He had a dream in which Lord Vinayagar asked him to build a temple in his honour. When he woke up, he found a suitable place to build the temple and started construction. He also invited all the saints and scholars of the area to come and stay in the temple.
