The Delhi Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Swaminarayan and located in New Delhi, India. It is the largest Hindu temple in India and the world, and is also the first Akshardham temple in the world. The temple was inaugurated on 6 November 2005 by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The temple complex is spread over an area of 100 acres (400,000 m2) and includes a large central monument, a traditional Hindu and Indian village, a theatre, and a research centre. The monument is made of 234 carved pillars, 9 ornate domes, and 20,000 murtis (statues) of Hindu gods and goddesses. The temple is built from 6,000 tonnes of pink sandstone and marble. The temple's central monument is 70 feet (21 m) high and contains a grand, ceremonial hall with a seated statue of Swaminarayan. The hall is flanked by two towers, each rising to a height of 95 feet (29 m). The complex also includes a traditional Indian village, complete with a goshala (cow shelter), and a 1,200 seat theatre. The temple is open to all Hindus and is free to visit. It receives around 4 million visitors each year.
