About Adalaj Stepwell
The Adalaj Stepwell is a five-story stepwell located in the village of Adalaj, 18 km north of Ahmedabad, in the state of Gujarat, India. It is also known as the Adalaj ni Vav (the stepwell of Adalaj). The stepwell was built in 1498 by Queen Rudabai, the wife of Vaghela chief Rana Veer Sinh. It is octagonal in shape and is constructed of red sandstone. It is 21.3 meters deep and has a width of 14.8 meters and a height of 7.5 meters. The stepwell has a total of five stories, each three meters wide and four meters deep, with a small mosque on the top. The stepwell is noted for its intricate carvings, which include images of Hindu gods and goddesses, as well as of everyday activities such as farming and fishing. History of Adalaj Stepwell
The Adalaj Stepwell is a stepwell located in the village of Adalaj, in Gandhinagar district, Gujarat, India. It is located near the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar highway, about 21 km north of Ahmedabad. The stepwell was built in 1499 by Rana Veer Singh of the Vaghela dynasty, and is dedicated to the Hindu god, Virupaksha. It is said that the stepwell was built in five days, by 500 masons, at a cost of 1 million rupees. The stepwell is entered through a ornate gateway, which is flanked by two turrets. The well is built in the form of a three-storeyed stepped pyramid, with a rectangular tank at the base. The well is decorated with carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses, and is said to be the most ornate and best preserved stepwell in Gujarat.
