Gangotri is a holy place situated at a height of 3,048 meters above sea level in Uttarkashi district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The place is known for its religious significance and attracts devotees from all over the country. Gangotri is one of the four pilgrimages (Char Dham) of Uttarakhand. The other three pilgrimages are Badrinath, Kedarnath, and Yamunotri. The origin of the Ganges River is at Gangotri and the river is known as Bhagirathi here. The temple of Gangotri is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The temple was constructed by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century. The original temple was destroyed in 1806 by an avalanche but was later rebuilt. The best time to visit Gangotri is from April to October.
