History of Har Ki Pauri

The sacred ghats of Haridwar were constructed by King Vikramaditya (a renowned emperor of India who ruled from 57 BC to 37 BC) and his queen, Chandravati. It is believed that the queen, herself, was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu and took a bath in the Ganges every day. She also wanted her husband to build a set of steps leading down to the river so that she could take her daily bath easily. The king complied with her wishes and built the Har Ki Pauri (the steps leading to the God Vishnu) at Haridwar.
