Umaid Bhavan Palace History
The Umaid Bhawan Palace was built in the 1930s as a residence for the Maharaja of Jodhpur. It was designed by the American architect, Henry J. Kaiser. The Maharaja never moved in, as he died before the palace was completed. The palace was used as a military hospital during World War II, and then as the home of the Rajmata (Queen Mother) of Jodhpur. In the 1970s, the palace was abandoned and fell into disrepair. In the 1990s, it was restored and opened as a luxury hotel.
