Kaza is a small town located in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is the headquarters of the Kaza subdivision. The town is situated at an altitude of 3,600 metres (11,811 feet) and is the largest town in the Spiti Valley. Kaza is the only town in the valley with a population of more than 5,000. The Spiti Valley is a high-altitude desert and, as such, experiences very cold winters and very hot summers. Kaza is one of the coldest places in India, with average January temperatures of −16 °C (3 °F) and July temperatures of 27 °C (81 °F). Kaza is connected to the rest of India by a motorable road that branches off the Manali-Leh Highway at Kunzum La, about 55 kilometres (34 miles) from Kaza. The town has a number of small shops and restaurants, as well as a post office, a bank, and a hospital. There is also a government-run school and a few private schools. Kaza is a popular destination for tourists, who come to the town to enjoy its natural beauty and to explore the nearby attractions, which include the Spiti Valley Monastery, Key Monastery, and Tabo Monastery.
