About Kargil
Kargil is a small town in the Kargil district of Ladakh region in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located on the banks of the Suru River, a tributary of the Indus River. Kargil is the second largest town in Ladakh after Leh. It is the headquarters of the Kargil district. Kargil is located at 34.05°N 76.15°E / 34.05; 76.15. It has an average elevation of 2,811 metres (9,219 feet). The Suru River flows past the town. Kargil is connected to Leh by the National Highway 1D, also known as the Leh-Srinagar Highway. Kargil is the headquarters of the Kargil district.
The Kargil district is divided into two tehsils, Kargil and Zanskar. Kargil has a cold desert climate (Köppen climate classification "BWk"). The average annual temperature in Kargil is 5.8 °C. The average annual precipitation is 204 mm, with the majority of the precipitation occurring in the winter months. The town is home to the Kargil War Memorial, which commemorates the Indian soldiers who died in the 1999 Kargil War. The Suru Valley is a popular tourist destination, with many trekking routes passing through the area. The Zanskar Range is also a popular tourist destination, with many mountain peaks and glaciers in the area.
