The city experienced rapid growth and economic expansion during the Industrial Revolution. In the late 19th century, Liverpool was designated as a city and became a world city with a major port.
 
The city was heavily bombed during World War II, but it recovered and continued to grow. Liverpool is known for its music and culture, and it is home to two Premier League football clubs, Liverpool F.C. and Everton F.C. The city is also home to the world's oldest Chinatown.
Liverpool is a major tourist destination, with attractions including the Liverpool Cathedral, the Beatles Story, and the Mersey Ferry. The city is also home to the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University.
