The district of Midnapore is located in the state of West Bengal in India. The district has an area of 6,838 square kilometers and a population of 5,521,814, as per the 2011 census. Midnapore is divided into six subdivisions: Midnapore Sadar, Chandrakona, Garbeta, Pingla, Kharagpur and Jhargram. The district has its headquarters at Midnapore town. Midnapore is well connected by road and rail. The NH-6 (old NH-32) passes through the district and connects it with Kolkata in the north and Bhubaneswar in the east. The district has a total road length of 6,838 kilometers. Midnapore has two railway stations, Midnapore and Kharagpur, both of which are connected to Howrah and Kolkata. The Howrah-Kharagpur Railway Line, which passes through the district, is the busiest railway line in India.
