Chungthang is a small town and a notified area committee in North Sikkim district in the Indian state of Sikkim. Chungthang is located at an altitude of about 8,000 feet (2,400 m) above sea level. Chungthang is the gateway to the sacred Kanchenjunga mountain range. The economy of Chungthang is based on agriculture, tourism and trade. The main crops grown in the area are maize, wheat, rice, potato and vegetables. Chungthang is a popular tourist destination and is known for its natural beauty and serenity. The town is also a transit point for tourists travelling to the Kanchenjunga National Park. Chungthang is well connected to the rest of Sikkim by road. The nearest railway station is at New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, about 160 km (99 mi) away. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra, about 170 km (110 mi) away.

Legend of Chungthang valley

The Chungthang valley is located in north Sikkim. The valley is known for its natural beauty and the legend associated with it. According to the legend, a princess named Chungthang Chogyal fell in love with a commoner named Khyentse. The king was not happy with the relationship and ordered his soldiers to kill Khyentse. However, the princess intervened and saved Khyentse's life. The king was so angry that he ordered the princess to be killed. However, she escaped and took refuge in the Chungthang valley. The valley is said to be named after the princess.
