History of Sainte-Chapelle

The history of Sainte-Chapelle begins in the year 1248 when King Louis IX of France ordered the construction of a chapel on the Ile de la Cite in Paris. The chapel was to be used to house a relic of the Crown of Thorns, which had been given to the king by Emperor Baldwin II of Constantinople. Construction of the chapel began in 1248 and was completed in 1260. The chapel was dedicated to Sainte-Chapelle, the patron saint of Paris. The chapel was destroyed by a fire in 1836, but was rebuilt in the same style by architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. The chapel is now a museum and is open to the public.
