Location The Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary is located in North Sikkim district of Sikkim state in India. About the Sanctuary The Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1988 as a protected area for the conservation of the black-necked crane. The sanctuary is also home to other animals including the leopard, goral, serow, and musk deer. The sanctuary is located in a hilly area with elevations ranging from 2,600 to 4,500 meters. The climate is cold and temperate with monsoon rains. The sanctuary is open to the public from October to May. Wildlife in the Sanctuary The black-necked crane is the primary species of interest in the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary. This crane is a large, tall bird with a white body, black head and neck, and red bill. It is a migratory bird that breeds in the high-altitude wetlands of the Tibetan Plateau and winters in India, Bhutan, and Nepal. The leopard is the largest predator in the sanctuary and is a threatened species. The goral is a small, goat-like animal that is also threatened.
