The ancient temple of Arkeshwara at Talakad is an important pilgrimage center for Shaivaites. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalams, representing the five elements of nature. The temple is located on the banks of the Cauvery River and is surrounded by sand dunes. The temple is believed to have been built by the Ganga dynasty kings and is said to have been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The present structure is said to have been built by the Hoysala kings in the 12th century. The temple has a massive Gopuram or tower and a large compound. The temple is famous for its exquisite sculptures and carvings.
