Tuticorin is a port city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the headquarters of the Tuticorin district. Tuticorin is a major seaport on the Gulf of Mannar. The city is located about 590 km south of the state capital Chennai and about 8 km from the tip of the Indian mainland. The city's name comes from the Tamil words tuti 'cotton' and korin 'port', meaning 'port of cotton'. The city is home to a port and an oil refinery. The port is the second largest in Tamil Nadu. The refinery is owned by the state-owned Hindustan Petroleum Corporation. The city is also home to a thermal power plant, the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station. The city is connected to the rest of India by road and rail. The road connection is through the National Highway 45. The rail connection is through the Tuticorin railway station. The city is also connected to the rest of Tamil Nadu by boat. The city is home to the Tuticorin Port. The city is home to a number of tourist attractions. These attractions include the Tuticorin Fort, the Marthandam Temple, the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple, the Srivaikuntam Temple, and the Vadakku Vallalar Temple. The city is also home to a number of beaches. These beaches include the Tiruchendur Beach, the Kanyakumari Beach, and the Vattakottai Beach.
