It's the month of August and it is the right time to visit a place like Ladakh.The travel to Ladakh itself is like an adventure that each one of us should enjoy at least once in our lifetime.As we all know Ladakh is a union territory of India with Leh as its capital.It has many beautiful landscapes to admire and get mesmerised as we travel.

How to reach Ladakh:

By air:The nearest airport is the Kushok Bakula Rimpochee airport in Leh.This is connected to international airports like Delhi and to other destinations like Kashmir,Mumbai,Chandigarh,Etc
 
By train:The nearest railway station is the Jammu Jammu Tawi which is 700km from Ladakh.From here a traveller can take a cab or board a JKSRTC bus to Ladakh

By Road:Ladakh can be reached by road through two routes one from Manali and one from Srinagar.You can reach Ladakh by cab or by bus.It is well connected to cities like Srinagar,Delhi,Manali,Chandigarh ,Kolkata,Etc.,
 
By motorbike: Ladakh is known for its scenic motorbike rides.It can be reached from Srinagar,Delhi or Chandigarh only between April to September because the highways are shut due to heavy snowfall in winter months.

Days required to cover Ladakh: 5 to 10 days depending on the time you have.

There are a number of lakes to visit in Ladakh namely Pangong Tso,Tso Moriri,Tso Kar,Chamar Tso,Yarab Tso lake,Kyun Tsoand Ryul Tso,Mirpal Tso,Kiagar Tso,etc.,
The three high altitude lakes in Ladakh are:

PANGONG TSO

This lake in Tibetan means narrow enchanted lake and as the name suggests is the most beautiful enchanting lake.The calm water surrounded by snow covered mountains are a bliss to watch.It is at an altitude of 4225m.
This lake also changes colour from blue to green throughout the day.
A number of rare migratory birds come to this lake and makes the place best for bird watching.
This lake completely freezes during winter.

TSO MORIRI

This is also called the mountain lake which is the largest lake among the high altitude lakes with an altitude of 4522m.
This lake gets its water from snow melts of the surrounding mountains and two streams one entering from the north and other from south west.It has no outlet and it cannot be used for agricultural activity.
This is also house for migratory birds like black necked cranes and geese.The blue colour and the serene view is mostly romantic however due to the high altitude oxygen is less and food,water and toilet facilities are rare to find so travellers must prepare themselves accordingly.

TSO KAR

The Tso kar wetland complex has two lakes connected one being the startsapuk Tso a freshwater lake and the other is the Tso kar a salt water lake which gets its water from the glacial melts.It is at an altitude of 4530m.
The lake is called Tso Kar or white lake due to the salt deposits on the margins due to the evaporation of salt water.
Due to the availability of freshwater there is a lot of wildlife here.Also bird watchers can watch a number of migratory birds at this lake.

NUBRA VALLEY

The Nubra valley is a beautiful place 150 km away from Leh and can be reached by jeep or bus from Leh.
It is a gorge formed by two rivers Shyok and Nubra.In Tibetan it is called the valley of flowers.It is also called the Orchad of Ladakh.
Nubra valley can be reached through the Khardung la pass which is the highest motorable roads in Ladakh.
The Diskit monastery is the headquarters of Nubra.
This monastery is known for its murals and frescoes and is one of the largest and oldest Buddhist monasteries in Nubra.
The 32m high Maitreya Buddha statue is an iconic statue in the Nubra valley.
The Nubra valley is rich in Leh berry and also a number of birds can be spotted here.
There are many hotel rooms or homestays for families.The hotel Snow Leopard gives the traveller a good stay charging about Rs 2000 per night.

LEH PALACE

The Leh palace is found overlooking the town of Leh.It is 2.2km from the city of Leh.It was abandoned during a war in the 19th centaury. It has nine storeys with the upper storey occupied by the royal families and the lower ones used as stables and store rooms.The palace is in a deteriorated condition and is being restored by the archeological department.
The museum of Leh palace contains a huge collection of precious ornaments,dresses of royal family,crowns and paintings made of crushed jems and stones that are 450 years old.
The roof of the palace provides Panoramic view of the city of Leh.The palace is opened for tourist visit from 7am to 4 pm every day.

SHANTI STUPA

This is a white domed shaped Buddhist stupa.It contains the relics of Buddha at its base and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ladakh for its religious significance.
It is 5 km from Leh and is found on a hilltop in Chanspa village overlooking the Leh palace.
It provides a best panaromic  view of the mountains and surrounding landscapes.It is illuminated with lights at night and is open for tourist visits from 5 am to 9 pm.

KHARDUNG LA PASS

We must travel 34 km from Leh to reach this pass.This is the second highest motarable road in Ladakh with an altitude of 5359m.It is the gateway to Nubra and Shyok valleys.In order to pass through this road tourists have to acquire an Inner Line Permit(ILP) and produce it at the checkpoint.

ZANSKAR VALLEY

It is a valley in the Zanskar taluk in  Kargil.This is a perfect holiday spot because of its pleasant climate,the snow capped mountains,the landscape and the glazing river.
June to September is the appropriate time to visit this valley.One can reach this valley from Leh via Kargil.
Zanskar valley has many places of tourist attraction.There are a number of monasteries to visit including the Sani monastery and some other places like Suri valley,Doda river and Shafat glacier,Rumtse,Baralacha la,etc.,

Ladakh has a number of beautiful monasteries like Alchi monastery, Diskit monastery,Hemis monastery,Thiksey monastery,Stok monastery Lamayuru monastery,Namgyal Tsemo monastery and many more.You can visit all of them or a few of them according to the time available.
The other places to visit in Ladakh are magnetic hill,Hemis National park,Gurudwara Pathar Sahib,Etc.,
