It is the administrative headquarters of Ghaziabad district. It is sometimes referred to as the "Gateway of UP" because it is close to New Delhi, the capital of India.
Ghaziabad district is named after the first Ghazi of India, Ghazi-ud-din Haider. He was the son of the last ruler of Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah. Ghazi-ud-din Haider was the first Indian ruler to raise the standard of revolt against the British in 1857. After the revolt was crushed, he took refuge in Nepal. Ghaziabad was founded in 1740 by Ghazi-ud-din Haider. It was originally a garrison town but later became a commercial center.
