Alibag is a town and a municipal council in Raigad district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is located about 100 kilometres (62 mi) south of Mumbai, the state's capital. It is a popular weekend getaway for residents of Mumbai.
The town is located on the Konkan Coast, at the mouth of the River Nira. It is surrounded by hills on three sides and the Arabian Sea on the fourth. The beaches of Alibag are considered to be some of the cleanest in Maharashtra.
The Alibag fort was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The fort is now in ruins, but the Church of Our Lady of the Mount, located within the fort, is still in use.
The town was a stronghold of the Maratha Empire. Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire, frequently stayed in Alibag.
Alibag is home to a number of temples, including the Khandoba Temple, the Mahaganapati Temple, and the Siddhivinayak Temple.
The town is also home to the Nagaon Beach, one of the most popular beaches in the area.
