It is located in the Palani Hills, about 120 kilometres (75 mi) southwest of the state capital Chennai. Kodaikanal is a popular tourist destination. Its economy is based on tourism, agriculture and horticulture. The town is home to a number of schools and colleges. The Palni Hills form a part of the Western Ghats, a mountain range that runs parallel to India's western coast. Kodaikanal is nestled in the hills, and is surrounded by forests. Kodaikanal has a humid subtropical climate (Kรถppen Cwa), with hot summers and cool winters. The temperature ranges from a high of 34 ยฐC (93 ยฐF) to a low of 4 ยฐC (39 ยฐF).
