About Kodaikanal solar observatory Kodaikanal Solar Observatory is a solar observatory located in the town of Kodaikanal in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was founded in 1901 by the British astronomer George Ellery Hale. The observatory is located on a hilltop called the "Palani Hills" at an altitude of 2,000 metres (6,562 feet). The observatory is used for solar observations, including solar photography and spectroscopy.
