Char Dham (literally “Four Abodes”) refers to four sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites in India that hold immense spiritual significance. The term is commonly used in two contexts: the pan-India Char Dham established by Adi Shankaracharya, and the smaller Himalayan Chota Char Dham in Uttarakhand.
Established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, these four temples are located in the four corners of India:
Badrinath Temple (North) – Dedicated to Lord Vishnu
Dwarkadhish Temple (West) – Dedicated to Lord Krishna
Jagannath Temple (East) – Dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Vishnu)
Ramanathaswamy Temple (South) – Dedicated to Lord Shiva
Visiting these four sites is believed to cleanse one of sins and help attain moksha (liberation).
More commonly referred to today as Char Dham, this pilgrimage circuit is located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand and includes:
Yamunotri Temple – Source of River Yamuna
Gangotri Temple – Source of River Ganga
Kedarnath Temple – Dedicated to Lord Shiva
Badrinath Temple – Dedicated to Lord Vishnu
These temples are nestled high in the Himalayas and are usually open from April/May to October/November due to heavy snowfall in winter.
The Char Dham Yatra is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism. Devotees undertake this journey seeking spiritual purification, blessings, and inner peace. The pilgrimage combines devotion, scenic beauty, and the challenging terrain of the Himalayas, making it both a physical and spiritual journey.
