About Gangotri temple Gangotri, the source of the Ganges, is a Hindu pilgrimage site in the Uttarakhand state of India. It is located in the Gangotri National Park at an altitude of 3,048 meters (10,000 feet). The temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Ganga. The original temple was destroyed by the Chinese in the 8th century, and the current temple was built in the early 18th century. The Gangotri glacier, from which the Ganges originates, is located about a kilometer (0.6 miles) from the temple. The Gangotri National Park is a wildlife sanctuary that is home to Himalayan black bears, musk deer, and snow leopards.
