About Great rann of kutch The Great Rann of Kutch is a vast salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the western state of Gujarat, India. It is about 7,500 square kilometers (2,900 sq mi) in size and is divided into two parts, the northern and the southern rann. The word "rann" means "desert" in the local Gujarati language. The Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh which becomes flooded with water from the Arabian Sea during the monsoon season from July to October. The area turns into a vast white landscape, as the salt water turns the mudflats into a sheet of ice. The Great Rann of Kutch is an important site for wildlife and is home to large populations of endangered species such as the Asiatic lion, the Indian white-backed vulture, and the Indian wild ass. It also supports a significant population of migratory birds.
