About Srirangapatna Srirangapatna, a small town in India, is located in the Mandya district of the state of Karnataka. It is situated on an island in the Cauvery River, about 20 kilometers from the city of Mysore. The town is known for its temple to Ranganatha, a form of the Hindu god Vishnu. Srirangapatna was the capital of the Mysore kingdom from 1399 until 1799. The town is also known for its association with the Indian independence movement; Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned here for several months in 1917. Today, Srirangapatna is a popular tourist destination, with visitors coming to see the temple, the fort, and the river island on which the town is located.
