Kanchipuram is well known for its temples, of which the Kanchi Kailasanathar Temple and Ekambareswarar Temple are the most prominent. The city is also home to the Kanchi Mutt, a prominent Hindu monastery. Kanchipuram is administered by a Special grade municipality constituted in 1947. As of 2011, the town had a population of 164,859.
