About Thattekad bird sanctuary The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary located in the Kothamangalam taluk of the Ernakulam district in the state of Kerala, India. The sanctuary is situated on the banks of the Periyar River, and is spread over an area of 25.72 km². It is the second largest bird sanctuary in Kerala, and is a protected area under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The sanctuary is home to a large number of birds, including the great hornbill, the Malabar pied hornbill, the Oriental pied hornbill, the Indian pied hornbill, the common kingfisher, the blue-tailed bee-eater, the Indian roller, the white-throated kingfisher, the spotted dove, the grey-headed dove, the rose-ringed parakeet, and the jungle crow. The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is a popular tourist destination, and is well-known for its bird-watching opportunities.
