About The pantheon The Pantheon is a temple in Rome, Italy, that was originally built as a Roman Catholic church in the 7th century. The present building was completed by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. He converted it to a temple to all the gods of the Roman Empire, and it is now the best preserved of all Roman temples. The building is circular with a portico of large granite Corinthian columns under a pediment. A rectangular vestibule links the porch to the rotunda, which is under a coffered concrete dome, with a central opening (oculus) to the sky. The Pantheon's large circular dome is a masterpiece of engineering, remaining the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. The height to the oculus and the diameter of the interior circle are the same, 43.3 meters (142 feet). The Pantheon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
