History of Baratang Island
The history of Baratang Island is shrouded in mystery. It is not clear when the island was first inhabited, or by whom. There are some references to the island in ancient texts, but these provide little information about its history.
Geography and Demographics
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, one of the most northerly districts of India, are a union territory of the country. The territory is made up of two island chains, the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands. The total land area of the islands is 8,249 square kilometers. The population of the territory as of 2011 was 379,944, of which the majority, 334,857, live on the Andaman Islands. The remaining 45,087 people live on the Nicobar Islands. The majority of the population is Hindu (89.2%), with a significant Muslim minority (10.8%). English is the official language of the territory.
