Located on the banks of the Ulhas River, Bhiwandi is a city in the Thane district of Maharashtra, India. It is located about 30 kilometres northeast of Mumbai, the financial capital of India. The city is well-known for its textile industry and is one of the country's most important power loom weaving centres.
Bhiwandi was founded in the 12th century by the Koli community. The city was known as Bhiwandi, and was the capital of the Bhiwandi Sultanate. The city was ruled by the Maratha Empire in the 18th century. The city was then annexed by the British East India Company in 1774. In 1853, the city was merged with the Thane district. The city experienced a period of growth in the 1950s, when it became a major centre of the textile industry.
The city is divided into two parts, Old Bhiwandi and New Bhiwandi. Old Bhiwandi is located on the banks of the Ulhas River, whereas New Bhiwandi is a newer part of the city, and is located on the outskirts of the city. Well, the city comprises many interesting sites and is definitely worth a visit.
