Badrinath is a small town and a nagar panchayat in Chamoli district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is the most important Hindu pilgrimage centre in the Garhwal Himalayas, and is one of the Chardhams, four sites in India which are holy to Hindus. Badrinath is also known as Badrinath Dham. The town is named after the Badrinath Temple, one of the most important Hindu temples dedicated to Vishnu. The temple is located on the banks of the Alaknanda River, one of the main headstreams of the Ganges. The Badrinath temple is part of the Garhwal Himalayas, and is part of the Chardham Mahamarg or "Four Holy Shrines" circuit. The town is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is about 300 kilometres (190 mi) north of the state capital Dehradun and about 50 kilometres (31 mi) south of the Indo-China border.
