The legend of Baba Baidyanath Dham Temple is that the temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Shiva is the god of destruction and regeneration in the Hindu pantheon. It is said that Shiva appeared to a local shepherd in a dream and directed him to build a temple on the spot where the shepherd found a black Lingam (an iconic representation of Shiva). The shepherd followed Shiva's instructions and the temple was built.
