History of Galleria dell'Accademia
The Galleria dell'Accademia was founded in 1784 as the Accademia di Belle Arti, or Academy of Fine Arts, by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo. The academy's primary purpose was to train artists in the neoclassical style favored by the ruling Medici family. The first director of the academy was the sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini.
