History of Kokrajhar

The history of Kokrajhar is linked with the history of the Bodo people. The Bodo people are an ethnic group who inhabit the Brahmaputra Valley in Assam, India. The Bodo people are believed to have migrated from the Tibeto-Burman region in the north and settled in the Brahmaputra Valley in the 13th century. Kokrajhar is believed to have been founded by the Bodo people in the 16th century. The Bodo people are a major ethnic group in Kokrajhar and the surrounding area. The area was part of the Koch Kingdom until the British annexed the kingdom in 1826. The area was subsequently administered by the British as part of British Assam. The area became part of the Indian state of Assam following Indian independence in 1947. Kokrajhar district was created in 1983.
