About Kedarnath
Kedarnath is a Hindu holy town located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated at an altitude of 3,583 metres (11,769 ft), and is surrounded by the Himalayas. The town is accessible only by helicopter or an arduous trek of 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) from Gaurikund. Kedarnath is the most remote of the four Char Dhams. The other three Char Dhams are Yamunotri, Gangotri and Badrinath. Kedarnath is believed to be the site where Lord Shiva meditated after the death of his wife Sati. The temple was built in the 8th century by Adi Shankara, a philosopher and theologian who was instrumental in the revival of Hinduism. The temple is one of the most visited places in India.
