About Zenana Enclosure

The Hampi Zenana Enclosure is a fortified palace complex for women in the ruins of Vijayanagara, India. It is located in the Royal Centre area of the ruins, between the Elephant Stables and the Lotus Mahal. The enclosure was built in the 16th century by the queen of Vijayanagara, Nagamma. It is a three-storeyed building with a pillared verandah on each level. The enclosure is entered through a gateway in the south-west corner, which has a portico with a pyramidal roof. The verandahs have carved wooden balustrades. The enclosure is now in ruins, but some of the carved stone panels that once adorned the walls are still visible.
