About Chittorgarh
Chittorgarh is a city and a municipality in Rajasthan state in western India. It lies on the Berach River, a tributary of the Banas River, and is located 219 kilometres (137 mi) from Jaipur. Chittorgarh is the administrative headquarters of Chittorgarh District. The city of Chittorgarh was the capital of the Mewar kingdom. The former capital of the kingdom is Chittor, located on the hill fort of Chittor. Chittorgarh is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the great king and warrior of Mewar. The Chittorgarh Fort is a massive fortification. It is located on a hilltop that overlooks the town of Chittorgarh and the Aravalli Range. The fort is also known as the Vijay Stambha (Tower of Victory) and is the largest fort in India. The fort was originally built by the Guhilot Rajputs in the 7th century, and was later enlarged and fortified by the Sisodia Rajputs. The fort is surrounded by a wall that is 7.5 kilometres (4.7 mi) long and is studded with over 180 towers. The fort is also home to a number of Hindu and Jain temples. The Chittorgarh Fort is a major tourist attraction and is open to the public.
