Ranchi was the epicentre of the Jharkhand movement, which sought to create a separate state for the tribal areas of South Bihar, northern Orissa, western West Bengal, and eastern Chhattisgarh. The Bihar divisions of Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas were carved out of Jharkhand on November 15, 2000. The city has extensive rail and road connections and serves as the regional hub for agriculture, cotton, and tea. The city's main industries include silk production, shellac manufacturing, and heavy machine tool manufacturing. Anchi has been chosen as one of the hundred Indian cities to be transformed into smart cities as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Smart Cities Mission.
